The holder of the post will be part of the Image Navigation, Registration and Calibration Competence Area INRC CA of the Remote Sensing and Products Division RSP. The holder of the post will followup and assess scientific developments in optical atmospheric radiative transfer modelling and develop and maintain enhanced radiative transfer tools. These tools are essential for the generation, vicarious calibration and validation of products from optical instruments of current EPS and MSG and future MTG and EPSSG satellite systems. DUTIES Review requirements and lead the selection andor applications of enhanced radiative transfer models in the optical spectrum from the UV to the Infrared to be used in the generation, vicarious calibration and validation of products from optical instruments, or to develop new algorithms, generate test data for processing chains and anomaly investigation Support the implementation and maintenance of radiative transfer models in development and operational environments, and their use for product generation, vicarious calibration and product validation Improve existing tools for vicarious instrument calibration and product validation using radiative transfer models Write and maintain documentation on radiative transfer models in use at EUMETSAT Support scientific aspects of the analysis of missionsystem tradeoffs and in the implementation and extension of radiative transfer models for use in product generation chains Coordinate the maintenance and further development of radiative transfer models to analyse the adequacy and correctness of user requirements Initiate and manage internal and external studies on the extension of relevant radiative transfer code Cooperate with external experts and support dedicated interactions with partner organisations e.g. NWP SAF, ECMWF, ESA, NOAA and the worldwide science community. Candidates must be able to work effectively in English and have some knowledge of French. SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE Advanced university degree in atmospheric physics, physical remote sensing, or equivalent. In depth scientific knowledge of the use and development of atmospheric radiative transfer models both line by line and fast models in the optical spectrum, including absorption, multiple scattering, polarisation and surface interactions, for the preparation of satellite remote sensing methods is essential Experience with the scientific development of applications of enhanced radiative transfer models in the optical spectrum from the UV to the Infrared to develop new toolsalgorithms, andor generate test data Experience with scientific applications and analysis tools e.g. IDLMATLAB, and fluency in a programming language are important C, C, FORTRAN, Python in UNIX environments. Expertise and experience in the use of parallel processing is an advantage Experience with collaborative scientific projects covering research and development work is important Strengths in analysis, synthesis and presentation, coupled with good interpersonal skills and a proven ability to apply these to interactions within a team and between teams. EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS The initial contract will be of 4 years duration, with subsequent 5 year contracts being awarded thereafter, subject to individual performance and organisation requirements. There is no limit to the amount of followup contracts a staff member can receive up to the EUMETSAT retirement age of 63 and there are certainly opportunities to establish a long career perspective at EUMETSAT. This post is graded A2A4 on the EUMETSAT salary scales. The minimum basic salary for this post is EURO 5,612 per month net of internal tax which may be negotiable based on skills and experience. The salary scale provides for increments on the anniversary of taking up employment, and scales are reviewed by the EUMETSAT Council with effect from 1 January each year. In addition to basic salary, EUMETSAT offers attractive benefits. Further information, including salary details, is available on the EUMETSAT web site. EUMETSAT is committed to providing an equal opportunity work environment for men and women. Please note that only nationals of EUMETSAT Member States may apply. The EUMETSAT Convention requires that Staff shall be recruited based on their qualifications, account being taken of the international character of EUMETSAT. ABOUT EUMETSAT EUMETSAT is Europes meteorological satellite agency. Its role is to establish and operate meteorological satellites to monitor the weather and climate from space 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This information is supplied to the National Meteorological Services of the organisations Member and Cooperating States in Europe, as well as other users worldwide. EUMETSAT also operates several Copernicus missions on behalf of the European Union and provide data services to the Copernicus marine and atmospheric services and their users. As an intergovernmental European Organisation, EUMETSAT has 30 Member States Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and the United Kingdom.
