For the location in Darmstadt Germany we are looking for a Remote Sensing Products Applications Software Engineer mfd to work at EUMETSAT. Tasks The Remote Sensing and Products RSP division of EUMETSAT develops, implements, validates, and evolves operational observational products from EUMETSAT and agreed third party satellites. Furthermore, the division provides scientific expertise required to establish user requirements and future EUMETSAT satellite systems. RSP is active in the following areas relevant to this contract Instrument navigation, registration, and calibration Derivation of geophysical products from remote sensing data Application of satellite data in meteorology, oceanography, and atmospheric composition Radiative transfer theory Atmospheric chemistry and physics Meteorology and oceanography Development and maintenance of operational scientific data processing and monitoring software Calibration and validation expertise of Level 1 and Level 2 products Scientific document writing. In more general terms RSP covers activities such as Development and maintenance of algorithms, products, and product processors from EUMETSAT satellite data Development of product quality monitoring tools Implementation and maintenance of operational product processors including reprocessing activities Satellite data and product calibration and validation preparation, planning and execution. The following identified activities are examples of the type of tasks which are envisaged Development and evolution of data handling software for products generated by EUMETSAT, or for products from external partners Upgrade of data processors to be compliant with new libraries or architectures Evolution and update of software packages for the reading and visualisation of remote sensing data and products Development of database applications for satellite data product monitoring e.g. in support of EPS Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment2 GOME2, Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer IASI and Advanced Scatterometer ASCAT Redesign of software applications, e.g. transfer from one SW language to another Evolution of software packages in support of validation activities with third party data e.g. from the ATrain satellite constellation or the Earth Clouds, Aerosols and Radiation Explorer EarthCARE mission Formatting of test data sets according to various product format specifications. Implementation and Delivery of SW DevelopmentEvolutions For each software evolutionsenhancements, the Contractor shall perform the following tasks Create the design, and following approval by EUMETSAT, implement and test the modifiedadditional functions, resulting in a new software package or modified version of the software considering user feedback Provide or update the relevant documentation as defined in the Individual Work Order and its associated Statement of Work Deliver the source code and, if applicable, the compiled software packages through an HTTP or FTP interface, or on a dedicated feature branch in a joint source code repository Delivery of the software includes a dedicated acceptance test taking place at EUMETSATs premises Essential requirements Throughout the full duration of the Contract, the Contractor shall provide personnel with the required skills in the areas specified in the Special Tender Conditions. These are Demonstrable experience in IT software development, including system engineering and system design Demonstrable experience of the following software and tools in Unix Linux, AIX development environments Java, CC, FORTRAN XML, HTML, PHP Python, IDL, MATLAB, R SQL databases e.g. Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL Demonstrable experience in software performance optimisation in advanced computer architectures Demonstrable experience of Software Configuration Management SCM methods and tools e.g. Subversion, git and branch based development workflows Demonstrable experience of MS Office tools for documentation purposes e.g. MS Word Demonstrable experience in software system and integration testing Demonstrable experience in software documentation Knowledge in satellite data processing will be considered an advantage. The amount of remote sensing data from modern, both current and future, instruments is increasing. This provides a challenge for fast and efficient data visualization. One possible solution to the problem is to harness the power of Graphics Processing Unit GPU. Therefore, knowledge in utilizing GPU in data visualization, e.g. OpenGL, is considered very beneficial. Other information Start date is as soon as possible. Work shall be carried out mainly at SCISYS premises. Work at EUMESTAT premises for specific periodsactivities can be requested and will be clearly identified and agreed in the corresponding Individual Work Orders.
