EUMETSAT is Europes meteorological satellite agency monitoring the weather and climate from space 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. EUMETSAT is an international organisation employing staff from across all 30 member states and this role is being advertised on multiple international job boards, but please note that this role would be based in Darmstadt, Germany and would require international applicants to relocate if successful. We are currently looking for an experienced Remote Sensing Scientist to join our international team of young and inspiring engineers and industry professionals, tasked with driving innovation within the Space, Satellite and Earth Observation sector. This role is routed in the mission of EUMETSAT and will provide the opportunity to work with leading IT, Space and Earth Observation organisations and domain experts to make a positive impact on society! This position is located within the Remote Sensing and Products RSP Division, which is tasked with providing the scientific expertise required to develop, implement, validate, maintain and evolve the operational observational products from all EUMETSAT satellites and agreed third party missions for example Copernicus Sentinel3, Sentinel4, Sentinel5, and Sentinel6, as well as establishing the user requirements for future EUMETSAT satellite programmes. Within the Atmospheric Chemistry Competence Area, the Remote Sensing Scientist Sentinel4 and Sentinel5 will support the scientific development, prototyping, validation and monitoring of products from the Copernicus Sentinel4Ultraviolet Visible Nearinfrared UVN and Sentinel5Ultraviolet Visible Nearinfrared Shortwaveinfrared UVNS missions implemented as part of the Meteosat Third Generation MTG System and EUMETSAT Polar System of Second Generation EPSSG respectively. What youll be doing Support the scientific development of calibrated radiance, irradiance and derived atmospheric composition products from ultraviolet, visible, near and shortwave infrared satellite instruments, with a focus on the Copernicus Sentinel4UVN and Sentinel5UVNS instruments Provide scientific support to the operational implementation of data processing and products, including prototyping of software and provision of associated documentation Define and carry out calibration, validation, and longterm monitoring activities for the Copernicus Sentinel4UVN and Sentinel5UVNS product suite in cooperation with ESA, other agencies and the scientific and user community Define, prototype, develop and exploit calibration, validation, and longterm monitoring tools Liaise with and provide support to the operational user community to facilitate uptake of the products Develop product enhancements including prototyping software and provision of associated documentation Instigate and lead external scientific studies, including management of related contracts Support Copernicus Sentinel4UVN and Sentinel5UVNS product reprocessing activities Take an active role in the detailed formulation of requirements for future products and services, responding to the evolving needs of the users. Skills and Experience Advanced knowledge of optical remote sensing techniques for trace gases and other atmospheric composition parameters and direct experience in retrieval of trace gases and other atmospheric composition products from ultraviolet, visible, near and shortwave infrared spectrometers Demonstrated experience of ultraviolet, visible, near and shortwave infrared spectrometer instrument calibration and characterisation including longterm monitoring activities Demonstrated experience in the use of radiative transfer models Proven experience in developing scientific application software involving interactions with user communities Experience with operational data processing systems and skills in a higher programming language e.g. C, Fortran Organised and methodical with strengths in analysis, synthesis and presentation Strong interpersonal skills and a proven ability to apply good communication skills to the interactions within a team and between teams.
