SRONs mission is to bring about breakthroughs in international space research. Therefore the institute develops pioneering technology and advanced space instruments, and uses them to pursue fundamental astrophysical research, Earth science and exoplanetary research. As national expertise institute SRON gives counsel to the Dutch government and coordinates national contributions to international space missions. SRON stimulates the implementation of space science in our society. SRON stimulates the implementation of space science in our society. ResearchInstrument scientist fm vac.nr. 1424 Develop instruments where the sky is no limit Job Summary SPICA is an Mclass ESA mission and has recently been selected for a 3 year phaseA study. SRON, in its role as Principal Investigator, is responsible for the SAFARI instrument onboard SPICA. SAFARI is an ultrasensitive infrared grating spectrometer that uses stateoftheart superconducting Transition Edge Sensors TES. The detectors operate at milliKelvin temperatures and are readout by Frequency Division Multiplexing. The readout electronics operates at MHz frequencies and consists of superconducting highQ filters, SQUID amplifiers, low noise analog amplifiers, and a Digital Baseband Feedback system. We are looking for a research scientist to support the team that makes the FDM readout compliant with the requirements of the SAFARI instrument. As a member of a team of experts, you will be responsible for tasks within the theoretical analysis and experimental verification of the FDM readout. Analysis has to be carried out to determine the optimal parameters of the readout electronics in combination with the detectors e.g. bandwidth, filter design, EMI compatibility, noise performance, crosstalk. Experiments will be carried out in milliKelvin cryostats to verify the performance and to demonstrate the required technology readiness level for space application of FDM. At the end of the 3 year study phase the FDM readout should be at a Technology Readiness Level 5. Duties Within a team of instrument scientist and engineers you will be responsible for the development of part of the Frequency Division Multiplexing readout for TES array. The focus of your role will depend on your previous experience relevant to the fields of interest Carry out analysis and theoretical modelling for the proper dimensioning of components within the Frequency Division Multiplex system Design the photolithographical masks that define the required superconducting structures that are made in house in the SRON cleanroom Perform and analyze experiments with TES detectors and FDM readout in milliKelvin ADR and Dilution fridges. Qualifications PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering or a discipline related to instrumentation Experience on electronics, preferably on one of those lownoise electronics, electronic feedback systems, high frequency digital and analog electronics, electromagnetic modelling The ideal candidate has experience with superconducting devices and their characterization, for example, SQUIDs, TES detectors, or cryogenic test facilities Innovative and creative, but able to deliver within the boundaries of the project timeline Good communicator and listener Good verbal and written communication skills in English Team player, working well as part of a diverse team Ability to work in a continuously changing environment. Important competencies Takes initiative Result driven Analytical Judicious SRON core competencies Innovative Focused on collaboration Responsibility A global player Flexibility Employment conditions Employment of this fulltime position as an Instrument Scientist at SRONUtrecht is by NWOI The Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research Institutes and will be for a period of three years. SRON Utrecht will move to Leiden in 2021. Longer term employment is a possibility. The salary will be in accordance with the salary scales of NWOI scale 10, which will be between 45.000, and 59.000, gross per year, depending on experience.
