Samsung presents Exynos 7 Octa processor for smartphones

2015-02-16 12:13:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Samsung has presented its new Exynos 7 Octa processor for high-end smartphones. The company is starting mass production of the chips using its 14 nm FinFET technology. This '3D' method builds up the chips in various layers. Compared to the previous 20nm manufacturing, Samsung said its new process offers a 20 percent increase in speed, 35 percent less energy use and a 30 percent improvement in productivity. More products will adopt the new method in the course of this year. Samsung did not provide any further details of the Exynos 7 Octa, but the product is expected to debut as a 64-bit processor in the next top Galaxy S model. Samsung is expected to provide more details in early March. The previous Galaxy S5 was made in various versions, with Qualcomm Snapdragon or Samsung's own Exynos processor. According to recent reports, Samsung has decided against using Qualcomm in its latest top smartphone, in favour of its own processor.
