Samsung targets emerging markets with new Rex series

2013-02-14 12:33:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Samsung Electronics has unveiled a new range of advanced feature phones to target emerging markets. The handset maker recently warned that it sees the smartphone market slowing this year, and it will need to look beyond the mature markets that have sustained its growth to date to build new growth areas. Similar to Nokia's Asha series, Samsung's new Rex phones incorporate a number of features usually found on smartphones, while keeping the price affordable for low-income markets. The four Rex models unveiled offer only Edge access, but come with touchscreen displays and the Samsung Touchwiz interface as well as apps such as Samsung's ChatOn, Twitter, Facebook and a number of instant messengers. They are also loaded with the Opera Mini browser, Wi-Fi, microSD card slots, cameras and dual-Sim functionality. Four form factors are available - the Rex 60, 70, 80 and 90. Samsung did not say when or where it plans to launch the phones on the market.
