Sky sees peak data traffic double to 2 Tbps on Christmas Day

2014-12-29 09:17:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) UK pay TV and broadband operator Sky reported that the amount of data crossing its network doubled to a peak of 2 Tbps on 25 December, equivalent to around 1 million homes streaming Disney's Frozen in HD at the same time. Over half of internet traffic on the day was from streamed video services, including Sky on demand. The operator, which has over 5 million subscribers on its network, saw a steady increase in traffic on the day between 08:00 and 12:00. Traffic dropped as customers had lunch between 13:00 and 15:00 and rose again to reach an evening peak at 23:00. Comparatively, on the Black Friday weekend Sky's network saw a lower demand as customers took to shopping online instead of streaming videos.
