(Telecompaper) Philippine communications provider Smart and Globe have begun restoration works following damage to the networks by typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan). Smart is offering free call services in Tacloban city using satellite services in partnership with Telecoms Sans Frontieres (TSF). The city remains mostly cut off from regular mobile communications the company said and added that it is doing massive restoration efforts for mobile communications in the hardest hit towns in Leyte and Samar. Together with affiliate Sun Cellular, Smart is also offering free call services in a number of affected locations. Smart and Sun have also opened an SMS donation number with donations going to the Red Cross. Meanwhile, Globe Telecom said it established a temporary cell site Tacloban city and that it has begun repair efforts in the Visayas region with the assistance of government units. Globe has also organised free call stations and battery charging stations in a number of areas.
