A recent survey from Gartner Research reports that in 2014 Microchip Technology was ranked as the top 8-bit and 16-bit MCU vendor in sales of its PIC devices. One possible reason Microchip is retaking the lead may be that some of its competitors are abandoning 8/16-bit MCUs as a declining market.
