State sugar industry bleeds amid falling sugar prices, rising costs

In what is emerging to be a major political challenge for the BJP-led government, a dozen private mills in India\'s top sugar producing state of Maharashtra have shut operations mid-way through the crushing season, weighed down the steep slide in sugar prices and rising input costs, leading to cumulative arrears of Rs 2500 crore to be paid to farmers.
