In 1980 I was working as a brakeman on the Alaska Railroad, and on the day after Thanksgiving, I was sent to Fairbanks from Anchorage, where I lived, after some seasonal layoffs of lower seniority brakemen. I had never spent a winter in Fairbanks, and the temperatures soon went between 40 below and 60 below.
