Stocks gain on strong housing data

The Dow Jones industrial average gained 0.7% in late morning trading. The S&P 500 added 0.8%, rising back above 1,500, while the Nasdaq rose 0.9%. Pending home sales, which reflects the number of contract signings, rose 4.5% in January, according to the National Association of Realtors.
