UNCW is considering spending $7 million to upgrade its wireless internet access.

Officials say some of the "access layer" equipment is so old that manufacturers won't provide support or security upgrades. At peak times, more than 23,000 devices are connected to wireless network at once, according to Carey Gibson, director of infrastructure and operations services.
