Vodacom service revenue growth improves to 4.7%

(Telecompaper) African mobile operator Vodacom reported revenues for the June quarter up 7 percent year-on-year to ZAR 19.56 billion, led by a steady improvement in its home market South Africa and double-digit growth elsewhere in Africa. Organic service revenue growth was 4.7 percent, to a total ZAR 15.66 billion, with a 2.8 percent rise in South Africa and an 11.3 percent increase at the international operations. Data grew to over 30 percent of service revenue, or ZAR 4.85 billion, up 35.2 percent from a year earlier. The active customer base increased 6.5 percent to 63.5 million at the end of June, and data customers were up 10.8 percent to 28.0 million. Compared to March, Vodacom added 1.2 million new customers in South Africa, for a total 33.31 million. At the international operators, the DRDC led growth, gaining just under 700,000 new customers, and Mozambique added 154,000 new subscribers, while the Tanzania base was slightly lower on a sequential basis.
