Vodafone India, Idea Cellular in merger talks - report

(Telecompaper) India's second- and third-largest mobile operators, Vodafone and Idea Cellular are in "exploratory" talks for a possible merger, unnamed sources told CNBC-TV18. However, a possible merger could infringe anti-trust regulations, as the combined entity would breach the 50 percent market share in a few circles. Idea rejected the report in a statement to the stock market, saying it was "absolutely untrue and preposterous". Vodafone India declined to comment on the matter.
