(Telecompaper) Vodafone Netherlands announced that it has started deploying small cells as part of its 4G network. The small cells are mini base stations with a reach of ten to several hundred metres, used to boost capacity in areas with high traffic. The small cells will be rolled out initially in Vodafone and BelCompany shops under the name 'Speed Zone', to familiarise customers with the new technology. In addition the operator will use small cells at busy locations in cities, to improve the quality of mobile internet services. The small cells are part of phase two of the company's FastForward network upgrade programme. Vodafone said its use of small cells is a first for the Netherlands and also the first deployment in the Vodafone Group.
