Vodafone eyeing Liberty Global, TalkTalk - report

2014-12-01 08:53:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Vodafone is reviewing potential acquisitions, including cable group Liberty Global, which owns Virgin Media in the UK amongst a dozen European cable companies, to counter the pending consolidation of rivals in the UK, people close to the matter told Reuters. The acquisition of Virgin Media would bolster the broadband network Vodafone acquired from Cable & Wireless in 2012. BT group recently revealed that it was in talks to buy either mobile operator EE or Telefonica-owned mobile operator O2. Hutchison Whampoa, which owns mobile operator 3 UK, is also reported to be preparing a bid for either EE or O2. One person familiar with the matter said Vodafone approached Liberty Global earlier this year, but found too great a difference on price. Vodafone is open to all options in the UK, including a deal for TalkTalk, according to another person who spoke to Reuters, although it is seen as a weaker option as TalkTalk has few fibre lines. Vodafone and Liberty Global declined to comment.
