Consumers Energy to install buoys below dams for safety

Consumers Energy is working with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to install buoys to help warn the public to stay out of potentially unsafe areas immediately downstream of hydro-electric dams. The unit of Jackson-based CMS Energy Corp. says Friday it plans to put in buoys this month at the Foote, Cooke, and Croton dams.

Many blamed them for exacerbating destruction. An 11-member expert committee recommended that 23 dams on the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers, the two main tributaries of the Ganga, be scrapped.
