Forest Service reminds tourists why Mendenhall glacier is shrinking

2016-05-30 18:54:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Alaska Public Media: In a wing of the Mendenhall Glacier Visitors Center a small crowd of onlookers is watching a debate between a man and an employee. The tourist is wearing a floppy hat and red shirt. And hes leaning on a silver tipped cane as he listens waiting for a chance to respond. Kat Pratt is a ranger and interpreter. She was delivering talking points on sea level rise when the man who didnt want to give his name challenged her. He thinks rising temperatures are cyclical. Not caused by people. And...

Climate change could trigger 'tipping point' for Antarctic Totten Glacier

2016-05-20 13:10:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Australian Broadcasting Corporation: The Totten Glacier in East Antarctica has an unstable area that could collapse and contribute to more than two metres of sea level rise beyond what is generally predicted if climate change remains unchecked, researchers say. Key points: East Antarctica has traditionally been considered to be relatively stable But evidence is growing that Totten Glacier is bucking the trend New analysis shows the glacier could contribute over two metres to sea level rise East Antarctica is the world's...

Totten Glacier may face 'rapid retreat'

2016-05-19 06:29:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

BBC: Unchecked climate change could put Antarctica's huge Totten Glacier into an unstable configuration over the coming centuries, a study has warned. If that happens, the ice loss could push up global oceans by 2m, or more. The claim is based on an assessment of the rocks underlying the ice stream. Scientists tell the journal Nature that should the front of the glacier retreat about 150km from its current position, it will then enter a runaway reversal that takes it 200-250km further inland....

Chinese glacier retreat signals trouble for Asian water supply

2015-12-09 15:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

New York Times: Over the years, Qin Xiang and his fellow scientists at a high and lonely research station in the Qilian Mountains of northwest China have tracked the inexorable effects of rising temperatures on one of Chinas most important water sources. The thing most sensitive to climate change is a glacier, said Dr. Qin, 42, as he slowly trod across an icy field of the Mengke Glacier, one of the countrys largest. In the 1970s, people thought glaciers were permanent. They didnt think that glaciers would...
