NY Fracking Report Underscores Quake, Climate Risks

2015-05-14 23:02:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Climate Central: New York is 2,000 pages closer to becoming the first fossil fuels-rich state in the U.S. to ban fracking indefinitely because of the climate-changing methane it could emit and the earthquakes, air pollution and water contamination it could cause. Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced in December that fracking, short for the natural gas extraction process called hydraulic fracturing, would be banned in New York, where the energy-rich Marcellus shale holds up to 9 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. The state...

Fracking may affect air quality, human health

2015-05-13 17:02:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

ScienceDaily: People living or working near active natural gas wells may be exposed to certain pollutants at higher levels than the Environmental Protection Agency considers safe for lifetime exposure, according to scientists from Oregon State University and the University of Cincinnati. The researchers found that hydraulic fracturing -- a technique for releasing natural gas from below-ground rock formations -- emits pollutants known as PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons), including some that are linked...

Fracking Chemicals Found in Drinking Water, New Study Says

EcoWatch: If you ask communities on the frontline of the fracking industry in the U.S. what their greatest concern is about the controversial technology, often the reply is the threat to their drinking water. The fracking industry replies in the way it always does to these concerns: it downplays the risks with an arrogance that verges on indifference. The standard reply from the industry is that fracking cannot contaminate water as the fracking rocks are normally thousands of feet below drinking aquifers...

"Denton Fracking Bill" Headed to Gov. Abbott's Desk in Texas

2015-05-05 15:08:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Texas Tribune: The so-called Denton fracking bill is headed to Gov. Greg Abbott's desk. The Senate on Monday approved House Bill 40, which would pre-empt local efforts to regulate a wide variety of oil and gas activities and has stirred concerns in some towns that have sought to blunt the effects of drilling close to homes, schools and businesses. The proposal already sailed through the House, and Monday's passage -- with no amendments tacked on -- means that it needs only Abbott's signature to become law....

Cities and counties statewide could no longer prohibit hydraulic fracturing under a sweeping, oil and gas industry-backed bill that has cleared the Texas Legislature. The proposal was easily approved by the Senate on Monday after passing the House last month.
