Ice wall at Fukushima plant switched on, but will it work?

2016-03-31 15:43:27| Energy - Topix.net

In this March 10, 2014 file photo, workers wearing protective gears install a trial model of the underground frozen wall at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant in Okuma, Fukushima prefecture, northeastern Japan in their attempt to stop the leakage of radioactive water that has accumulated at the crippled nuclear power plant. Japanese regulators on Wednesday, March 30, 2016, approved the use of a giant refrigeration system to create an unprecedented underground frozen barrier around buildings at the Fukushima nuclear plant in an attempt to contain leaking radioactive water.

Japanese regulators on Wednesday approved the launch of an unprecedented refrigeration structure resembling giant popsicles that would form a huge underground frozen barrier around the wrecked Fukushima nuclear reactor buildings in a desperate bid to contain contaminated water. The plant's operator, Tokyo Electric Power Co., said it planned to turn on the ice wall Thursday, in an attempt to minimize the risk of contaminated water escaping into the water.

Five Years After Nuclear Disaster Fukushima Remains Highly Contaminated

Yale Environment 360: It has been five years since a powerful earthquake and resulting tsunami caused a meltdown at the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant in Japan. While a few towns closed after the disaster have reopened and some locals have returned, groundwater en route to the ocean, as well as nearby soils, remain highly contaminated with radioactive waste. Toxic water and soil that has been removed by the cleanup projects 8,000 workers sit in a growing number storage tanks on the property, several of which...

The flight from Fukushima - and the grim return

2016-03-11 09:46:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Ecologist: Five years after the Fukushima nuclear disaster began to unfold, the searing psychological effects are still being felt among the 160,000 refugees who fled the fallout, writes Linda Pentz Gunter. But now there's growing pressure to return to contaminated areas declared 'safe' in efforts to whitewash the disaster's impacts. Why the rush? To clear the way for the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics, complete with events in Fukushima City. Patriotic duty will be center stage in the lead-up to the 2020 Summer...
