Soil around Fukushima site remains contaminated with dangerous radioactive waste
2015-04-19 01:16:47| Waste Management - Topix.net
The soil surrounding the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant remains contaminated with radioactive cesium, with a high risk that those atoms could transfer to food crops, suggests a study conducted by researchers from Kyoto Prefectural University and published in the Journal of Environmental Quality . The March 2011 earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan triggered multiple meltdowns at the Fukushima plant, causing the plant to eject a radioactive plume into the atmosphere that spread across Japan's countryside and the northern hemisphere.

Food from Fukushima could be hitting Britain's shelves through legal safety loophole
2015-04-13 23:18:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Independent: Food produced around the Fukushima nuclear disaster site could be making its way on to British shelves because of loopholes in safety rules, The Independent can reveal. Products contaminated by radiation, including tea, noodles and chocolate bars, have already been exported from Japan under the cover of false labelling by fraudsters. Experts warned that Britains food regulations were not strong enough to prevent these kinds of contaminated products which are fraudulently marked as coming...

1st robot into Fukushima reactor stalls, but gets some data
2015-04-13 19:14:27| Energy - Topix.net
In this Thursday, Feb. 5, 2015 file photo, a remote-controlled robot that looks like an enlarged fiberscope crawls down into the mock-up of a primary containment chamber of Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant, during a demonstration for the media at a government facility in Hitachi, Ibaraki Prefecture, northeast of Tokyo. Tokyo Electric Power Co., the operator of the wrecked Fukushima nuclear plant, said Monday, April 13, the first robot, the same type shown in the photo, sent inside one of melted reactors stalled before finishing its work but it collected data that indicates a path to send robots deeper into the reactor is intact.
Fukushima reactor meltdown was man-made disaster, says official report
2015-04-13 16:32:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Guardian: Last year's accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant was a manmade disaster caused by poor regulation and collusion between the government, the operator and the industry's watchdog, a report has said. In a highly critical assessment published on Thursday, a Japanese parliamentary panel challenged claims by the plant's operator, Tokyo Electric Power (Tepco), that the triple meltdown at the plant in north-east Japan had been caused solely by a 14-metre tsunami on 11 March last year....
