Are you our new colleague? Are you an enthusiastic postdoctoral researcher who wants to study the role of mergers in galaxy evolution utilizing imaging data from large and deep galaxy surveys such as data from the KiloDegree Survey and the Euclid mission? Do you have a Ph.D. in astronomy or a related field and do you have experience with large galaxy surveys, machine learning andor simulations? We would like to encourage you to apply. You and SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research You will work closely with experts in machine learning deep learning and simulations of galaxy formation and evolution within SRON and The University of Groningen. Your position and team The Astrophysics program at SRON is headed by dr. Frank Helmich. Deputy head is dr. JanWillem den Herder. The Astrophysics science group attached to this program consists currently of 52 persons, largely filled in by externally funded positions and guest scientists. You will join the research group led by dr. Lingyu Wang at SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research and University of Groningen in the Netherlands. Your project Galaxy mergers result from cataclysmic collisions between galaxies, triggering intense bursts of star formation, rapidly feeding supermassive black holes in galactic centers, and eventually forming a new single entity under the influence of gravity. Mergers are among the most violent events in the Universe and therefore have a profound influence on the structure of the cosmos. The overarching goal of this project is to greatly advance our knowledge of galaxy evolution by quantifying, in detail, the role of galaxy mergers across cosmic time, using an integrated approach that combines three recent breakthroughs in highresolution galaxy surveys, computer vision using deep learning techniques, and stateoftheart cosmological simulations. Position requirements We are looking for a person with a Ph.D. in astronomy or a related field. We would like to see demonstrable experience of this through a portfolio of small or large projects, preferably with detailed photos and explanations. SRONs mission is to bring about breakthroughs in international space research. Therefore, the institute develops pioneering technology and advanced space instruments, and uses them to pursue fundamental astrophysical, Earth science, and exoplanetary research. As national expertise institute SRON gives counsel to the Dutch government and coordinates national contributions to international space missions. SRON stimulates the implementation of space science in our society. Our Earth Science Group has vacancies for Two Postdocs Vacancy number 1639 Project Outline In October 2017 ESAs Sentinel5 Precursor mission was launched with the TROPOMI instrument as its single payload. TROPOMI is a collaboration between the Netherlands and ESA. SRON is the coPrincipal Investigator Institute and its responsibilities include the operational algorithms for methane. One of our new projects using the TROPOMI methane data exists in the framework of the Methane Science Studies of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition CCAC Oil and Gas Initiative. These studies support the aim of the CCAC to reduce methane emissions from the oil and gas sector worldwide in close cooperation with UNEP, and with industry participating in the coalition. The TROPOMI methane measurements provide unprecedented new methane data to detect and quantify emissions from the oil and gas sector worldwide as is already shown with a number of high profile scientific papers Varon et al., 2019 Pandey et al., 2019 de Gouw et al, 2020 Schneising et al., 2020 Zhang et al., 2020 httpswww.nytimes.com20191216climatemethaneleaksatellite.html This project will further expand on that work. The project will be executed in close collaboration with the TROPOMI methane team at SRON, and with scientists from the Environmental Defense Fund and the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Tasks The main task of the postdocs is to analyze local and regional methane enhancements in the TROPOMI data, as well as the further quantification and interpretation of the corresponding emissions. The focus will be on methane emissions from the oil gas sector. The results will be published in scientific peer reviewed journals. Requirements For this exciting project we are looking for ambitious, highly motivated and result driven scientists with a PhD degree in atmospheric sciencesastrophysics or a similar degree, with experience in the interpretation of atmospheric e.g. satellite, aircraft, ... data using transport models. Good computer programming skills are also expected. Experience with flux inversions is considered an asset. Good knowledge of the English language is essential and the candidate should be capable to work both independently and in a team. Employment conditions Employment of this fulltime position as a Scientist C at SRONUtrecht is by NWOI The Netherlands Foundation of Scientific Research Institutes and will be for a period of 2 years with the possibility of an extension. The salary will be in accordance with the salary scales of NWOI with a maximum of 4.452, gross per month on a fulltime basis highly depending on education and relevant experience. NWOI has good secondary employment conditions such as An end of year bonus of 8,33 of the gross yearly salary 42 days of vacation leave a year on fulltime basis A holiday allowance of 8 of the gross yearly salary An excellent pension scheme Options for additional personal development Excellent facilities for parental leave. Our Earth Science Group has two vacancies for PostDocs fm vac.nr. 1213 pos.1 and 1249 pos.2 Project Outline and Tasks pos.1 The postdocs task will be part of an international project to define the future European carbon dioxide monitoring instrument as part of the EU Copernicus Space segment and to develop operational algorithms for methane and carbon monoxide retrieval for ESAs Sentinel5 mission. This project continues the Sentinel5 Precursor heritage of SRON to infer information on atmospheric composition from satellite Earth observation for air quality and climate research. The work includes analysis of the instrument performance, sensitivity analyses, documentation, and generation of test data and will be performed in close collaboration with ESA and our international partners. Project Outline and Tasks pos.2 This project aims at exploiting the innovative HDO and H2O measurements from the Sentinel5 Precursor satellite mission, to be launched in autumn 2016. Its single instrument payload TROPOMI will provide unprecedented measurements of atmospheric water vapor and its heavy water isotopologue HDO, giving us new insides in the Earth hydrological cycle. The main task of the postdoc is to infer water vapor and HDO total column density from TROPOMI shortwave infrared measurements at 2.3 m and to validate the data products with groundbased measurements of the NDACC and TCCON network. Here, different retrieval strategies need to be compared and data continuation with the previous SCIAMACHY mission must be envisaged. To demonstrate the data use of the H2OHDO data product, satellite data will be interpreted in close collaboration with modeling groups focusing on the atmospheric water cycling.
