SRONs mission is to bring about breakthroughs in international space research. Therefore the institute develops pioneering technology and advanced space instruments, and uses them to pursue fundamental astrophysical research, Earth science and exoplanetary research. As national expertise institute SRON gives counsel to the Dutch government and coordinates national contributions to international space missions. SRON stimulates the implementation of space science in our society. Our Earth Science Group has a vacancy for a PostdocScientist fm vacancy nr. 1376 Project Outline The goal of the project is to quantify aerosol emissions through a data assimilation system that uses novel aerosol data of microphysical and optical properties provided by satellite MultiAngle Polarimeter MAP measurements. It is to be expected that MAP measurements can significantly improve topdown estimates of aerosol emissions. However, at present, there are no data assimilation systems that use the detailed aerosol information that MAP measurements can provide and the added value of these measurements for the estimation of emissions of different aerosol species has not been investigated yet. Starting from an existing ensemble Kalman filter for aerosol, the postdoc will develop a rigorous dataassimilation framework for topdown estimates of aerosol emissions that can cope with the full aerosol information coming from MAP measurements. The developed framework will be evaluated with extensive Observing System Simulation Experiments OSSEs, where the added value of present and future instrument concepts will be evaluated. Also, the framework will be used to estimate aerosol emissions from one year of PARASOL measurements and relate the Direct Radiative Effect of Aerosols DREA to different aerosol sources. The work is highly relevant for climate research as aerosols represent one of the largest uncertainties in our understanding of radiative forcing of climate. During the project, the postdoc will be supported by a team of experts on remote sensing, aerosol modeling and data assimilation through close collaboration with scientists from SRON, TNO and the Vrije Universiteit VU Amsterdam. The postdoc will be expected to present their work at international workshops and conferences, building on the international contacts that already exist within the team. For part of the project the postdoc will be located at the VU in Amsterdam. Requirements For this interesting and challenging project we are looking for a scientist with a PhD degree in atmospheric science, or astro physics with strong programming skills preferably in Fortran90 and Python. Experience in the field of data assimilation or aerosol modelling would be an asset. Good knowledge of the English language is essential. Functional competencies Analytical Clarity of expression Result driven SRON core competencies Innovative Focused on collaboration Responsibility A global player Flexibility Employment conditions Employment of this fulltime position as a Scientist C at SRONUtrecht is by NWOI The Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research Institutes and will be for a period of 3 years. The salary will be in accordance with the salary scales of NWO with a maximum of 4,154.00 gross per month on a fulltime basis highly depending on education and relevant experience. NWO has good secondary employment conditions such as An end of year bonus of 8.33 of the gross yearly salary At least 42 days of vacation leave a year on fulltime basis An excellent pension scheme Options for additional personal development Excellent facilities for parental leave A holiday allowance of 8 of the gross yearly salary. As national expertise institute SRON gives counsel to the Dutch government and coordinates national contributions to international space missions. SRON stimulates the implementation of space science in our society. Our Earth Science Group has a vacancy for a PostdocScientist fm vacancy number 1399 Project description With the successful launch of ESAs Sentinel5 Precursor satellite on October 13th, 2017 with the TROPOMI instrument aboard, a wealth of data on the atmospheric composition becomes available including the global distribution of the important anthropogenic greenhouse gas methane. SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research has the responsibility for the methane data processing algorithm and together with our national and international partners we envisage the scientific exploitation of the unique methane data product. Therefore, the project has versatile objectives. After analyzing currently processed data, the postdoc will investigate possible improvements of the already existing retrieval approach. To this end, the TROPOMI methane data product will be compared with existing groundbased measurements and observations by other satellite missions. Moreover, the postdoc will analyze the data using global and regional simulations of chemical transport models to identify relevant methane sources, improving our understanding of todays climate change. During the project, the postdoc will be supported by a team of experts on remote sensing and atmospheric modelling through close collaboration with scientists from SRON and our partners. The postdoc will be expected to present their work at international workshops and conferences, building on the international contacts that already exist within the team. The postdoc will be located at SRON in Utrecht, the Netherlands. Requirements For this interesting and challenging project, we are looking for a scientist with a PhD degree in atmospheric science, or astro physics with strong communication and programming skills preferably in Fortran90 and Python.
