EPA bans sale of pesticide that's toxic to honey bees
2015-11-14 03:39:35| Chemicals - Topix.net
It's the end of the line for sulfoxaflor, a pesticide used on a wide array of produce, but that has been found to be toxic to honey bees that are crucial to pollination of crops. The federal Environmental Protection Agency on Thursday officially prohibited further sales and distribution of the chemical, produced by Dow AgroSciences.
Scents and sense ability: Diesels fumes alter half the flower smells bees need

ScienceDaily: In polluted environments, diesel fumes may be reducing the availability of almost half the most common flower odours that bees use to find their food, research has found. The new findings suggest that toxic nitrous oxide (NOx) in diesel exhausts could be having an even greater effect on bees' ability to smell out flowers than was previously thought. NOx is a poisonous pollutant produced by diesel engines which is harmful to humans, and has also previously been shown to confuse bees' sense of smell,...
Study: Global warming, evolution are clipping bees' tongues

Associated Press: Global warming and evolution are reshaping the bodies of some American bumblebees, a new study finds. The tongues of two Rocky Mountains species of bumblebees are about one-quarter shorter than they were 40 years ago, evolving that way because climate change altered the buffet of wildflowers they normally feed from, according to a study published Thursday in the journal Science. In one of these species, the tongue had been half the size of the bee's body the equivalent of a human tongue going...

Climate Change and Killer Bees: Northward Expansion in California
2015-09-15 01:04:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Nature World: The Africanized honey bee is a hybrid of the European and African honey bees. It was introduced to California in 1994, and has been rapidly expanding ever since. This "killer bee"--so-called because they attack intruders in numbers much greater than the European honey bees do--was recently seen as far north as California's Delta Region, according to University of California-San Diego researchers. "Our study shows that the large majority of bees one encounters in San Diego County are Africanized...

U.S. court finds EPA was wrong to approve Dow pesticide harmful to bees
2015-09-10 22:45:20| Chemicals - Topix.net
A U.S. appeals court ruled on Thursday that federal regulators erred in allowing an insecticide developed by Dow AgroSciences onto the market, canceling its approval and giving environmentalists a major victory. The ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, in San Francisco, is significant for commercial beekeepers and others who say a dramatic decline in bee colonies needed to pollinate key food crops is tied to widespread use of a class of insecticides known as neonicotinoids.
