Decline bees, other pollinators, threatens crop output: UN body
2016-02-26 09:54:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Agence France-Presse: Populations of bees, butterflies and other species important for agricultural pollination are declining, posing potential risks to major world crops, a UN body on biodiversity said Friday. "Many wild bees and butterflies have been declining in abundance, occurrence and diversity at local and regional scales in Northwest Europe and North America," said an assessment by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). It said declines had also been...

Vital to food output, bees and other pollinators at risk
2016-02-26 09:26:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Reuters: Bees and other pollinators face increasing risks to their survival, threatening foods such as apples, blueberries and coffee worth hundreds of billions of dollars a year, the first global assessment of pollinators showed on Friday. Pesticides, loss of habitats to farms and cities, disease and climate change were among threats to about 20,000 species of bees as well as creatures such as birds, butterflies, beetles and bats that fertilize flowers by spreading pollen, it said. "Pollinators are...

Bee Decline Linked To European Bees and Human Trading, Study Finds
2016-02-05 22:04:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Nature World: Bee populations have taken a hard hit, and it appears humans are to blame for the recent decline. Researchers from the Universities of Exeter and California, Berkeley, have discovered that a deadly bee disease that originated in European populations has spread worldwide as the result of importing infected honeybees. What's worse: bee colonies are suffering from what researchers call a "double blow." The dreaded Deformed Wing Virus paired with Varroa destructor mites, which feed on bee larva, has...

EPA Assessment finds insecticides may be harmful to bees.
2016-01-08 14:31:08| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today
Delivering on President Obama’s National Pollinator Strategy, U.S. EPA announced a preliminary pollinator risk assessment for the neonicotinoid insecticide, imidacloprid, which shows a threat to some pollinators. EPA’s assessment, prepared in collaboration with California’s Department of Pesticide Regulation, indicates that imidacloprid potentially poses risk to hives when the pesticide comes in contact with certain crops that attract pollinators.
