Kinetic energy harvesting: Everyday human activity could power the internet of things

2013-07-11 14:24:04| Extremetech

Researchers at Columbia University have conducted the first exhaustive study into kinetic energy harvesting -- the harvesting of "free" energy from common human activities, such as walking, writing with a pencil, taking a book off a shelf, or opening a door. Surprisingly, except for those living the most sedentary lifestyles, we all move around enough that a kinetic energy harvester -- such as a modified Fitbit or Nike FuelBand -- could sustain a wireless network link with other devices, such as a laptop or smartphone.

How to Set Up a Microwave Internet Link Over Distance

2013-07-11 14:00:00| TechNewsWorld

Around this time of year some buddies and I usually pack up a bunch of our brick-like ham radios, a few unwieldy 30-foot masts, a helium balloon antenna and some pop-up shade shelters and lug it all over to a local mountaintop near our suburban Los Angeles homes. We traipse up the baked hillside with this gear each year to perform a nonstop radio experiment that lasts over a weekend.

EC raids internet providers in peering investigation

2013-07-11 13:45:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) The European Commission has raided the premises of a number of operators offering internet connectivity services in the EU amid suspicions they may have violated competition rules and abused their dominant positions. Representatives of national competition regulators were also present. While the EC did not disclose which companies were subject to the raid, French newspaper Le Figaro reports that offices of Orange, Telefonica and Deutsche Telekom were visited starting on 09 July, and the inspections will continue until 12 July. According to the paper, the EC investigation follows a complaint from US-based Cogent Communications. Cogent lost a case last year brought against Orange at the French competition regulator, claiming the French operator was compromising the free exchange of traffic flows between networks used by transit operators, by requesting payment for opening up additional technical capacity for access to Orange subscribers. Orange wanted compensation for receiving 13 times as much internet traffic from Cogent as it sent to the US operator, largely due to Cogent hosting the Megaupload P2P site. According to Le Figaro, Cogent has filed a similar complaint against the Spanish and German operators now. Orange said it was cooperating with the EC investigation and was confident the earlier competition ruling would be upheld. Deutsche Telekom also confirmed to Bloomberg its offices were searched.
