Vodafone goes back to basics after failed Liberty deal

The world's second-largest mobile operator abandoned talks with John Malone's Liberty last week over valuation disagreements that would have seen a swap of assets or a broader merger that could have helped Vodafone, in one fell swoop, offer mobile, broadband and TV in its biggest markets. Instead the focus now returns to the unglamorous effort to get revenues and profit growing steadily again, especially in Germany and Spain where Vodafone spent 15 billion euros buying cable players Kabel Deutschland and Ono to compete with local leaders Deutsche Telekom on upgrading its networks globally.

VMA's next Valve Basics Seminar & Exhibits will be held Oct 21–23 at the Hyatt Regency San Antonio-Riverwalk. The 101 portion of the course (Oct 21–22) consists of lessons that guide attendees through world of valves and systems they help control. New this year is the addition of a third day of programming (Oct 23), which features intermediate-level courses on topics such as standards, materials, packings and fugitive emissions, critical service applications, and valve repair.

Facebook announces Free Basics app, mobile website

(Telecompaper) Facebook has announced a new name for its Internet.org app and mobile website Free Basics by Facebook. Facebook says the change will better distinguish the Internet.org initiative from the programs and services it is providing, including Free Basics. According to Chris Daniels, VP of Internet.org, Internet.org is the entire programme, while Free Basic services is "just a portion of Internet.org". Free Basic services is Facebook's initiative with operators, where it "offers a set of services where people can come online for the first time and understand what the internet is all about".
