Helping inspire next generation of environmental scientists and engineers, EPA announced 34 fellowships for undergraduate students in 25 states and Puerto Rico to pursue environmental science and related fields of study. Awards are part of EPA's Greater Research Opportunities (GRO) fellowship program and provide students with opportunity to gain hands-on experience with agency scientists. Students selected for fellowships are undergraduates entering their junior year.

EPA GHG Report says automakers surpass standards for second year.

According to EPA's second annual Manufacturers' Performance Report, automotive industry outperformed national greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions standards for 2 consecutive model years. Overall industry compliance in model year 2013 was 12 g/mile (1.4 mpg) better than required by 2013 standard. According to EPA's most recent CO2 Emissions and Fuel Economy Trends Report, model year 2013 vehicles achieved all-time record average of 24.1 mpg – nearly 5 mpg increase since 2004.

EPA seeks input for potential NMP rule.

EPA is seeking nominations from individuals who represent small businesses, small governments, and small not-for-profit organizations to provide input to federal panel that will explore risk reduction in use of N-Methylpyrrolidone and methylene chloride for paint or coating removal. Regulatory Flexibility Act requires agencies to establish Small Business Advocacy Review Panel for rules that may have a significant economic impact on a substantial number of small entities.

EPA proposes reporting requirements on nanoscale materials.

For first time, EPA is proposing to use Toxic Substances Control Act to collect existing exposure and health and safety information on chemicals currently in marketplace when manufactured or processed as nanoscale materials. Proposal will require one-time reporting and recordkeeping of specific chemical identity; production volume; methods of manufacture; processing, use, exposure, and release information; and available health and safety data.
