NASA is being forced by the US government to fly a mission to Europa the most likely place well find alien life in the Solar System
2014-03-07 19:49:13| Extremetech
In a rather intriguing twist, it appears that NASA is now mandated by law to fly a robotic mission to Jupiter's watery moon Europa. Europa is an incredibly exciting science target, as it's believed to have a 100-kilometer-thick (62 miles) outer layer of water, with water ice on top (it's very cold out there) and a liquid water ocean beneath that. As we continue to learn more about the tenacious lifeforms found in deep, cold waters here on Earth, excitement grows over the possibility of Europa's oceans harboring extraterrestrial life.

Gravity wins seven Oscars now see the beautiful NASA photos that inspired the movie
2014-03-03 14:41:37| Extremetech
NASA has released a beautiful set of photos inspired by Gravity, the movie that last night won seven Oscars. These are perhaps the most beautiful photos of space that we've ever seen, mostly focusing on astronauts working on the International Space Station or Space Shuttle, but there are a few photos of the Earth at night and the Sun rising over the Earth, too. Perhaps the most remarkable thing about the photos, though, is just how closely they resemble various scenes and landscapes from Gravity.

Global Precipitation Measurement Core Observatory, a joint Earth-observing mission between NASA and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, launched into space on Feb 27 from Japan. GPM will help experts understand ever-changing climate, improve forecasts of extreme weather events like floods, and assist decision makers around the world to better manage water resources. While TRMM measured precipitation in the tropics, GPM Core Observatory expands coverage area from Arctic Circle to Antarctic ...This story is related to the following:Trade Associations

Amazon rainforest growth spurts were NASA satellite error
2014-02-18 15:53:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
LiveScience: Surprising dry season growth spurts spotted in the beleaguered Amazon rainforest are fake, the result of misleading satellite data, a new study finds. Most plants sprout new growth during wet seasons, and conserve their energy when it's dry. So scientists were surprised when they discovered the Amazon forest turns green during the tropical dry season from June through October even during an extreme drought based on data from NASA's Terra satellite. The initial findings were published in the...
