NASA Animation Shows Relentless Pace of 60 Years of Global Warming in 15 Seconds

2014-01-30 21:38:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

EcoWatch: 15-second NASA time-lapse video shows the steady and rapid warming of the planet since the middle of the twentieth century, with regions in the Arctic and Siberia warming as much as two to four degrees Celsius (3.6 to 7. 2 degrees Fahrenheit) above a long-term average: The animation begins in 1950, but the intensity of the yellow, orange and red colors shows how much temperatures have increased compared to baseline temperature data collected from 1880 to the present. NASA said that nine of...

NASA is planning to make water and oxygen on the Moon and Mars by 2020

2014-01-30 19:07:30| Extremetech

NASA is forging ahead with plans to make water, oxygen, and hydrogen on the surface of the Moon and Mars. If we ever want to colonize other planets, it is vital that we find a way of extracting these vital gases and liquids from moons and planets, rather than transporting them from Earth (which is prohibitively expensive, due to Earth's gravity). The current plan is to land a rover on the Moon in 2018 that will try to extract hydrogen, water, and oxygen -- and then hopefully, Curiosity's successor will try to convert the CO2 in the atmosphere into oxygen in 2020 when it lands on Mars.

Nasa technology to reveal ice melting impact on climate

2014-01-30 15:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Indo-Asian News Service: A new laser-based technology from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa) holds promise to tell how the melting of earth's frozen regions may affect our climate. This opens a new vista for researchers to better track the melting or growth of ice sheets, glaciers and sea ice. A high-altitude aircraft from Nasa flew over the icy Arctic ocean and the snow-covered terrain of Greenland recently. Aboard that aircraft flew the Multiple Altimeter Beam Experimental Lidar, or MABEL,...

NASA data reveals impact of cyclones on forests in Vietnam, Madagascar

2014-01-30 08:48:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Mongabay: Forest disturbance in Madagascar and Vietnam increased significantly in the aftermath of cyclones that hit the countries last year, according to a forest tracking tool developed by a team of NASA researchers. NASA's Quarterly Indicator of Cover Change (QUICC), a MODIS satellite-based product that underpins Mongabay.com's Global Forest Disturbance Alert System (GloF-DAS), detected substantial woodland disturbance in the landfall path of Typhoon Haiyan in central Vietnam and Cyclone Haruna in the...

NASA sued by fringe scientist for failing to investigate a rock for signs of alien life

2014-01-29 19:00:13| Extremetech

A particularly litigious American, Rhawn Joseph, is suing NASA for failing to investigate an object, discovered by the Opportunity rover on Mars, that he claims is evidence of alien life. NASA, who has looked at the object with Opportunity's microscope, says the object is -- drum roll please -- a rock. Joseph's lawsuit claims that the object is a living thing that "germinated from spores," and thus NASA should be compelled to take hundreds of photos from multiple angles, and then send the original photos to Joseph for investigation. Who will blink first? (Hint: Probably not NASA.)
