NASA Satellite Spies Atmospheric Double Whammy
2014-06-09 22:30:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Climate Central: NASA's eyes in the sky are important parts of weather-monitoring efforts, with satellites tracking hurricanes as they barrel across the ocean and storm systems as they sweep across the country. But sometimes they just find really cool stuff in the atmosphere. Such is the case with an image taken by the MODIS instrument aboard the Aqua satellite (with a hat tip to Climate Central board member and University of Georgia professor Marshall Shepherd on Twitter). On June 8 it spotted a wow-worthy combo...

NASA installs space laser on the ISS, uses it to transmit high-speed data back to Earth
2014-06-09 18:28:42| Extremetech
NASA has successfully completed the first test of the International Space Station's new OPALS laser communications system. OPALS links the ISS to an observatory here on Earth at very high speeds (around 50 megabits per second), allowing for the real-time transmission of high-resolution video among other things. This is orders of magnitude faster than existing radio-based links, and is a significant step forward for future space exploration.
'Unflappable' Science 'Warrior' Chosen to Lead Key NASA Climate Lab

Science: NASA today named Gavin Schmidt, 46, to lead the Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), one of the worlds top climate research institutions. Schmidt, a climate modeler and current deputy director of the lab, follows in the footsteps of prominent climatologist James Hansen, who retired from the agency last year. Although Schmidt does not have quite the public name recognition of Hansen, he is known as one of the nations most visible communicators of climate science. With more than 120 scientific...
