Researchers create worlds first 3D-printed bionic organ
2013-05-02 20:01:31| Extremetech
A group of researchers at Princeton and Johns Hopkins have combined biology and electronics to create the first 3D printed organ -- a bionic ear. While this is more of a technology demonstration, 3D printing continues to astound, showing that artificial organs of the future need not be limited to just biological tissues.

Researchers create RFID-enabled paper, bringing us ever closer to traceable cash
2013-05-02 17:43:35| Extremetech
Physical legal tender has both benefits and drawbacks. One of the major benefits is that you can use it at establishments that don't accept credit or debit, which are surprisingly frequent if you live in a big city. Some major drawbacks are that it's more difficult to trace and much easier to steal than electronic funds. Those two drawbacks are on the verge of being remedied, though, as a team of American scientists has created paper equipped with RFID tags, making any paper money easily traceable.

Researchers create transistors out of nanowire forests, for ultimate scaling beyond 10nm
2013-05-01 20:00:44| Extremetech
As transistor size decreases, the limits of planar technologies have been partially alleviated by stepping into the third dimension. Researchers in France have come up with a 3D transistor design based on silicon nanowires that promises to extend lithographic techniques down to ever smaller scales.

Researchers create 3Gbps LiFi network with LED bulbs
2013-04-05 21:01:25| Extremetech
Researchers at the Fraunhofer Henrich Hertz Institute (HHI) in Germany have successfully transmitted data at 3Gbps using conventional LED bulbs in a laboratory setting. In a real-world setting (at a trade fair), the same system was capable of 500Mbps.
