Telecom Italia activates 5G in parts of Turin and Rome, launches new 'TIM Advance 5G' plans

(Telecompaper) Telecom Italia (TIM) has become the second operator to offer commercial 5G services in Italy with the activation of its network in parts of Turin and Rome accompanied by the launch of three new dedicated 5G-ready plans. Vodafone switched on its 5G network in the same two cities and in the Milan metropolitan area, Bologna and Naples on 16 June. "The 5G service, currently being implemented, is at the moment only available in some parts of Turin and Rome," announced the operator on its website, adding that all of Italy's main cities will be gradually added over time. TIM reached an agreement with Vodafone to share the cost of rolling out new 5G infrastructure throughout Italy earlier this year.

TIM signs agreement with Enel, CDP to begin talks on Open Fiber network tie-up

(Telecompaper) Telecom Italia (TIM) has announced the signing of a non-disclosure agreement with utility giant Enel and state lender Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (CDP) to begin negotiations on ways of integrating its own fibre-optic network with that of wholesale operator Open Fiber. "The objective of the discussions is to verify the feasibility of such an operation, the related procedures and the perimeter of activity subject to a possible agreement, based on the will of the parties and on the legislative and regulatory frameworks," said TIM in a brief statement.

TIM sells media unit Persidera to F2i for EUR 240 mln

(Telecompaper) Telecom Italia (TIM) and publisher Gedi Gruppo Editoriale have announced a binding agreement to sell their stakes in broadcasting unit Persidera to Italian infrastructure fund F2i and EI Towers for a total of EUR 240 million. The deal to divest TIM's 70 percent stake and Gedi's 30 percent holding in the former Telecom Italia Media Broadcasting company remains subject to approval and involves the demerger of Persidera into two separate entities. It's expected to close in the final quarter of 2019.
