(Telecompaper) Spanish operator Telefonica is negotiating an agreement with its two main rivals in the Brazilian market, America Movil and TIM, to jointly purchase the assets of Oi, sources close to the process told Spanish daily Expansion. The idea is to jointly buy the Brazilian operator and then distribute the assets. Telefonica may also try to reach an agreement only with TIM, since the advantages of the purchase for both are greater than in the case of America Movil, which recently acquired Nextel Brasil and its frequency spectrum.

In a statement, TIM said Conti announced at the end of a board meeting that he had taken the decision in the belief that he had completed his mandate and "in light of the stability achieved by the board in its operations and the renewed focus on creation of sustainable value for all the company's stakeholders."

The company's board has called a meeting to discuss the matter even though a replacement for Conti has yet to be identified, with current CEO Luigi Gubitosi likely to take over the chairman's powers on an interim basis.
