Verizon to acquire EdgeCast for USD 350 mln - report

(Telecompaper) Verizon is expected to announce the acquisition of CDN provider EdgeCast Networks in a few days, TechCrunch reported, citing sources. The deal could be work more than USD 350 million. Both EdgeCast and Verizon declined to comment on the matter. The deal is seen boosting revenues at Verizon's enterprise division, which would otherwise remain flat over the next year. The buy would also follow Verizon's acquisition of digital media streaming company upLynk a few weeks ago for a reported USD 75 million, as the carrier seeks to provide more ways to stream various types of content over its network.

TPG to buy AAPT for AUD 450 mln

(Telecompaper) Australian communications provider TPG Telecom will buy AAPT from Telecom New Zealand for AUD 450 million on a debt-free and cash-free basis. TPG will fund the acquisition by increasing and extending its existing debt facility. AAPT offers voice, internet, data, and cloud services to business and wholesale customers via its national network. TPG said that the acquisition will add 11,000km of fibre across six states and territories, fibre access to 1,500 premises, 15 data centres across all major capital cities, and widespread mid-band Ethernet capability to the company. Telecom New Zealand said that the sale of AAPT is consistent with its aim to focus principally on the New Zealand operations. The company anticipates in the first instance sale proceeds will be used to repay debt. The transaction, which is expected to complete on 28 February 2014, follows the sale of AAPT's consumer division in September 2010.

Box secures USD 100 mln in funding

(Telecompaper) US-based cloud storage service provider Box has announced new partnerships that include USD 100 million investment and commercial agreements. The new strategic partnerships are in line with Box's planned international expansion. The new relationships include commercial agreements and strategic investments from Japanese partners Itochu Technology Ventures, Macnica, and Mitsui USA and MKI, as well as strategic investments from Telefonica Digital and Australian communications provider Telstra. Coatue, DST Global, and existing Box investors also participated.

Messaging app Line passes 300 mln users

(Telecompaper) Messaging service Line announced that it has passed the milestone of 300 million registered users. In addition to East Asia, where the company started its expansion from its Japanese base, the app has been growing strongly in Hispanic regions such as Spain and Mexico. Currently, the company is focusing on the acquisition of new users in India, Turkey and West European countries including France, Germany and Italy by conducting localized promotional activities and strengthening partnerships with local mobile network operators and device manufacturers. In India, where the smartphone market is expanding rapidly, the offering of localized content and stickers featuring local celebrities has helped Line attract 10 million users within three months of launching on the market. The company aims to have 20 million users in India before the end of 2013. Line's growth has been accelerating steadily, adding the first 100 million users in 19 months, the next 100 million in six months and the latest 100 million in just four months. Line aims to reach 500 million users in 2014.
