IHS secures USD 490 mln for expansion across Africa

(Telecompaper) African telecommunications infrastructure provider IHS has secured USD 490 million of equity and debt financing for expansion across the continent. The round expanded IHS's base of institutional shareholders and was priced at a premium to IHS's last funding in July 2013. Support from existing investors was combined with strong participation from Goldman Sachs, the IFC Global Infrastructure Fund and African Infrastructure Investment Managers. This funding round brings the total amount of capital raised by IHS to more than USD 1.5 billion over the last 12 months. IHS will use the proceeds to finance acquisitions, help its customers expand coverage and capacity by building new towers and continue investing in alternative energy.

Korea's LTE base grows to 30 mln in February

(Telecompaper) The number of LTE users in South Korea is estimated to have exceeded 30 million in February. According to the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, the number stood at 29.4 million in January. SK Telecom ended February with 13.9 million LTE subscribers, followed by KT with 8.2 million and LG Uplus with 7.2 million, Yonhap writes. The LTE user base accounts for 80 percent of smartphone users in the country, which stood at 37.88 million in February.

Rakuten buys Viber for USD 900 mln

(Telecompaper) Japanese e-commerce group Rakuten has agreed to buy the mobile messaging service Viber for USD 900 million. Rakuten said the deal supports its expansion in the digital content space, following its acquisitions of Kobo, Wuaki.tv and Viki. Viber's messaging and VoIP services can be offered to the some 225 million customers of Rakuten's other web services, joining its 'Super Points' rewards programmes. Rakuten said it also sees potential to expand Viber's stickers platform and develop it as a gaming service, similar to the rival Japanese messaging service Line. Viber has over 300 million registered users worldwide, after growing over 120 percent in 2013.
Lenovo Q3 sales up 15%, ships almost 14 mln smartphones

(Telecompaper) Lenovo reported revenues for its fiscal third quarter up 15 percent year-on-year to USD 10.8 billion, while net profit rose 30 percent to USD 265 million. Operating profit increased 37 percent to USD 334 million. The Mobile Internet and Digital Home division, which develops smartphones, tablets and smart TVs, accounted for 16 percent of total revenues at USD 1.7 billion, up from 11 percent a year ago. In units, the company shipped more smartphones and tablets 17.3 million devices than PCs (15.3 million). Smartphones rose by 47 percent year-over-year to 13.9 million units, and tablets were up over 300 percent to 3.4 million units, helped by expansion to new markets and the Yoga Tablet. China still acounted for 37 percent of Lenovo's sales in the quarter, followed by the EMEA region at 27 percent. Sales growth was the strongest in the Americas, up 36 percent on growth in the US and Brazil. Looking ahead Lenovo said it will focus on securing regulatory approval and then integration of its recent acquisitions, the IBM server business and Motorola's handset operations.
