November 2013 WASDE, Crop Production reports confirm large corn, soybean crops

Source: University of Illinois The USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) has released new forecasts of the size of the 2013 corn and soybean crops. In addition, the USDA's World Agricultural Outlook Board released updated forecasts of the supply and consumption of those crops for the 2013-2014 marketing year. The reports contained no major surprises, confirming large crops, improved exports and prospects for larger year ending stocks and lower prices. read more

Farmland rental rates not reflecting lower crop prices

The very strong corn and soybean prices in the past couple of years, and the resulting increases in crop income per acre, have lead to significant increases in cash rental rates on farmland in recent years. Many crop producers are now concerned that the lower projected crop prices for 2014, and reduced estimates for gross income per acre, may not be high enough to justify the higher cash rental rates that are currently being charged, or are being proposed for the 2014. By Joe Vansickle Crop farmers scrambled to make headway in their quest to advance harvest this past week, passing the average for completion of the past five years (2008-2012), according to Crop Progress released today by the National Agricultural Statistics Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Corn harvest in the 18 top corn-producing states reached 73% completion as of Nov. 3, 2013, ahead of the previous five-year average of 71% and making notable gains over last week’s completion rate of 59%. read more

Farmers made big progress in the last week harvesting the 2013 corn crop, closing in on the average pace. The crop also gained in the good/excellent condition ratings. Soybean farmers made good progress in the field, too, reaching the average harvest pace for this time of year. read more
