Nokia expects up to EUR 3 per 5G phone from patent licensing fees

(Telecompaper) Nokia said it expects to charge up to EUR 3 per mobile phone in order to license its standards-essential patents for 5G New Radio. The company issued its estimate for licensing rates ahead of the expected finalisation of 5G standards later this year and the first 5G phones hitting the market in early 2019.

Deezer raises EUR 160 million to fund expansion

(Telecompaper) Global music streaming platform Deezer has raised EUR 160 million in fresh funds from investors, including the Saudi-based Kingdom Holding Company, Access Industries, French operator Orange and LBO France. The cash injection takes Deezer's valuation past the EUR 1 billion mark.

Open Fiber completes EUR 3.5 bln finance package for FTTH project

(Telecompaper) The European Investment Bank (EIB), state lender CDP and a pool of 13 banks have signed off on a EUR 3.5 billion finance package to fund the fibre-optic broadband rollout plans of Italian wholesale operator Open Fiber. In a statement, Open Fiber said the finance deal is led by banks including UniCredit, Societe Generale and BNP Paribas and is the largest ever for a fibre-optic network in the EMEA region. "The transaction involves the most important Italian and international credit institutions and is an important sign of confidence in the project, in the wholesale-only model and especially in Open Fiber's employees who have done a fantastic job in recent months," said the company's CEO Elisabetta Rippa.

Spanish 5G auction raises EUR 438 million

(Telecompaper) Spain's auction of 200 MHz of spectrum in the 3.6-3.8 GHz band for 5G use reached total bids of EUR 437.7 million, more than double the minimum EUR 200 million required, the Economy Ministry announced. Including accumulated interest payments over 20 years of EUR 542.1 million, plus spectrum-reservation fees of EUR 868.5 million, the grand total raised by the Treasury is expected to be EUR 1.41 billion.

Google fined EUR 4.3 billion for abusing dominant position in Android market

(Telecompaper) The European Commission has confirmed a EUR 4.34 billion competition fine against Google for abusing its dominant position. The company was found to have imposed illegal restrictions on Android device manufacturers and mobile network operators since at least 2011, in order to cement its dominant position in the search market. Google refuted the claims and said it plans to appeal the decision.
