MTN Group posts H1 loss, organic revenue up 1.5%

(Telecompaper) MTN Group has reported a 14 percent increase in revenue to ZAR 78.88 billion for the first half of 2016 from ZAR 69.21 billion in the same period in 2015. This was positively affected by exchange rate movements and data services growth; excluding forex effects, revenue rose 1.5 percent. The number of subscribers was flat at 232.6 million on 30 June compared with 31 December 2015. EBITDA decreased 38.4 percent to ZAR 18.88 billion, hurt by the Nigerian regulatory fine (ZAR 10.499 billion). The net loss totaled ZAR 5.5 billion versus a profit of ZAR 11.9 billion a year ago.

LG posts Q2 mobile loss as G5 fails to sell

(Telecompaper) LG Electronics reported profits under pressure in the second quarter, led by losses at its mobile division as its latest flagship smartphone failed to sell enough. Revenues were up 0.6 percent year-on-year to KRW 14.00 trillion, as growth in its other divisions helped offset the weak performance in mobile. Operating profit dropped to KRW 584.6 billon from KRW 505.2 billion a year ago, while lower financial and one-time costs helped net profit rise to KRW 268.5 billion from KRW 198.1 billion. Mobile revenues fell 6 percent year-on-year to KRW 3.33 trillion, as smartphone shipments dropped 1 percent over the same period to 13.9 million. LG said it generated some KRW 150 billion in operating losses due to the increased marketing expense for the launch of its flagship G5, but the phone has to date sold less than hoped.

Yahoo! posts Q1 loss on 11% lower revenues

(Telecompaper) Yahoo! reported a net loss of USD 99 million or 10 cents a share for the first quarter, compared to a profit of USD 21 million or 2 cents a share a year ago. Revenues fell to USD 1.087 billion, and adjusted operating profit plunged to USD 7 million from USD 80  million. The company said the results were near the high end of its expectations and it was making progress on its initiatives to reduce costs and stimulate growth. Yahoo provided little information on its ongoing strategic review, saying only that it was a "top priority". According to CEO Marissa Mayer: "we have made substantial progress towards potential strategic alternatives for Yahoo. Our board, our management team, and I are completely aligned on this top priority for shareholders."
