Christian Science Monitor: NASA is one of the largest and most well-known agencies in the US government. But while many Americans associate the famous agency with moon walkers, space shuttles, and dramatic countdowns from 10, the agency actually has two clearly defined missions: Simply put, it is NASA's job to both study space from Earth and to study Earth from space. And it was these two core missions that Sen. Ted Cruz wanted to discuss with NASA Administrator Charles Bolden in a Senate subcommittee hearing yesterday....

Space Scientists Tell Ted Cruz Why He Should Care About Earth

New Republic: At a Thursday budget hearing in the Senate Space, Science, and Competitiveness subcommittee, Ted Cruz--long known as an informed, astute scientific observer, specifically regarding climate--insisted that NASA "get back to the hard sciences". In his mind, that means the agency should focus on more space exploration and less Earth science. [T]here are a lot of people studying Texas soil, youve got a whole Department of Agriculture that spends a lot of time and energy studying the soil in Texas and...

Director of RAL Space Lead the quest for answers in this unique senior role. At STFC, we are involved in over 200 space missions. These include the James Webb Space Telescope, an orbiting infrared observatory that will take the place of the Hubble Space Telescope at the end of this decade. Our challenge was to design the thermal systems for the Mid InfraRed Instrument MIRI, which will help to solve outstanding questions about our place in the evolving Universe. So this is a chance to leave a lasting legacy as you direct a cutting edge department committed to exciting research and applied technology and more. This critical role will see you lead over 200 scientists and engineers working on groundbreaking projects in astrophysics, atmospheric science, earth observation, heliospheric physics, planetary exploration, radio communications and solar and space weather. Ambitious and influential, you will manage our partnerships with the UK Space Agency, ESA and NASA, as well as with many countries including China, Russia, and Japan. Well look to you to develop a clear vision for the next chapter of our story, establishing strategic goals, developing policies to achieve these goals and securing the necessary resources to ensure the successful delivery of projects. An inspirational ambassador for the space programme, you will coordinate our outreach programme, respond to media requests for interviews and provide expert advice to the UK government and the wider international space community. This challenging role demands a highly respected member of the UK and international space sector with a PhD in science, engineering or equivalent together with a highly technical background in astrophysics. This will be matched by significant experience of business development or securing major research funding. Youll bring with you impressive links with relevant academic communities and industries together with the ability to influence at a global level. For further information and details on how to apply, please email STFCpenna.com for a candidate pack or you can call our executive search consultant Rebecca Jones at Penna on 020 7332 7870.
