Nest offers new Dropcam, smoke alarm
2015-06-18 08:56:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Nest Labs introduced its own home surveillance camera, the Nest Cam, based on its acquisition of Dropcam last year. It supports 1080p HD video and night vision for filming in the dark. Images can be streamed in real-time over Wi-Fi to a user's smartphone or computer, using the updated Nest 5.0 app. Customers buying the device can access the past ten days of footage online or subscribe to Nest Aware with Video History, a new cloud recording service from Nest that allows users to rewind 30 days of video and receive more accurate motion alerts. The Google subsidiary is also working with YouTube to allow Nest Cam users to stream images to YouTube. The Nest Cam will launch next month in the US and Europe for USD/EUR 199. Nest Labs also announced a new version of its smoke alarm the Nest Protect, with a new split-spectrum sensor to detect different kinds of fires and the ability to turn the alarm off from the smartphone app. In addition, Nest is working with insurance companies Liberty Mutual and American Family in the US to allow people with home insurance to get a discount on the Nest Protect. As part of the offer, the device will share information with the insurers about its correct installation and functioning. It's available now for order for USD 99 or EUR 119.

2015-06-09 17:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Agence France-Presse: Scientists issued a dire warning Tuesday to UN climate negotiators in Bonn of a vicious global warming cycle that will be unlocked with the thawing of carbon-bearing permafrost. There may be 1,500 billion tonnes of carbon locked away in permafrost -- perennially frozen ground covering about a quarter of exposed land in the Northern Hemisphere -- said Susan Natali, a researcher with the Woods Hole Research Center in Massachusetts. The carbon will be released incrementally as global temperatures...
