ZTE to unveil Grand Memo II, Firefox phone at MWC

(Telecompaper) ZTE will unveil a new large-screen Android smartphone and its latest Firefox phone at the Mobile World Congress. In a preview of its handset offering in Barcelona, ZTE said it will present the Grand Memo II, a LTE phone with 6-inch screen. This is successor to its flagship smartphone launched last year at MWC. The Chinese company will also show with Telefonica the ZTE Open C, the first phone to run Firefox OS 1.3. In addition, ZTE is showing the latest version of its user interface, MiFavor 2.3. Other devices on display will include the Grand S II flagship smartphone, the ZTE Blade series and the Nubia series. ZTE said the new Nubia 5S and Nubia 5S mini outsold all other phones on the online shop Jingdong.com in December, including those from Apple, Samsung and Nokia. The company will also show products launched at CES, including the Projector Hotspot (a mini projector and Wi-Fi hotspot in one) and the ZTE Grand Watch Smart Watch.

ZTE returns to FY profit after strong Q4

(Telecompaper) ZTE reported a sharp improvement in profitability for the fourth quarter and full year. The Chinese equipment maker said it expects to report an annual profit of CNY 1.2-1.5 billion for 2013, compared to a loss of CNY 2.84 billion in 2012. It earlier reported a profit of CNY 552 million for the first nine months of the year. The company said it implemented stringent cost controls and exited low-margin businesses last year in order to return to profit and boost cash flow. Sales, administrative and research and development expenses all were reduced compared to a year earlier. In addition to winning key 4G contracts in its home market, ZTE expanded its market share in smartphones in key markets such as Spain and South Africa. It said it plans a further focus on 4G development and new products in 2014.
