Shire says FDA declines to approve eye drug Lifitegrast

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration notified Shire Plc it will not approve its eye drug Lifitegrast, the company said on Friday, adding that the U.S. health regulator recommended the company conduct additional clinical studies. The news comes over a week before the FDA was supposed to make a decision on Lifitegrast on Oct 25. Shire said it received a complete response letter, which the FDA sends to let a drug developer know a marketing application will not be approved in its present form.

U.S. health regulators declined to approve Pfizer Inc's oral rheumatoid arthritis drug Xeljanz to treat moderate to severe cases of the scaly skin condition plaque psoriasis, the drugmaker said on Wednesday. Pfizer said it received a so-called complete response letter from the Food and Drug Administration.

Another week, and another competitor is nipping at the heels of AbbVie Inc.'s rheumatoid arthritis treatment Humira, the top-selling drug in the world. This time it's Eli Lilly and its biotech partner Incyte Corp., which on Wednesday announced that their experimental drug baricitinib proved superior to Humira in a large study, raising questions about whether AbbVie of North Chicago can protect a product that generated $12.5 billion in sales last year.
