Intel to ship 5G chip earlier, in phones from 2020

(Telecompaper) Intel announced that its 5G modem, the Intel XMM 8160 5G, a multimode modem able to support peak speeds of up to 6 Gbps, will become available in the second half of next year and ship in commercial devices in 2020. Intel says it accelerated the timing of the launch by over half a year.

Samsung Q3 profit grows on memory chip demand, offsetting lower smartphone results

(Telecompaper) Samsung Electronics reported a strong increase in third-quarter results, led by sales of its memory chips and growing demand for OLED panels. This helped offset a decline in profits from smartphones, hurt by tough competition and soft demand. Samsung said it expects a slowdown in results in the fourth quarter as seasonality affects the components business.

Apple upgrades iPad Pro with faster chip, bigger screen, Face ID

(Telecompaper) Apple unveiled at an event in New York an updated version of its iPad Pro. The tablets come with the new Liquid Retina displays, a faster processor, Face ID replacing the Touch ID to unlock the device, a new USB-C Connector, gigabit LTE and the magnetic Apple Pencil. Available in 11- and 12.9-inch models, the new iPads go on sale 07 November in stores.

Samsung kicks off 7nm EUV chip production

(Telecompaper) Samsung Electronics has announced the launch of wafer production on its next process node: 7-nanometer (nm) LPP (Low Power Plus) with extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography technology. In a statement the company said 7nm LPP EUV is a significant advance on 10nm processes, allowing up to 40 percent increase in area efficiency with 20 percent higher performance and 50 percent lower power consumption. The new process will help create products that push the boundaries in areas such as 5G, Artificial Intelligence, enterprise and hyperscale data centres, IoT, automotive and networking, said Samsung.
