(Telecompaper) Qualcomm is in talks to acquire NXP Semiconductors for over USD 30 billion. The companies could strike an agreement in the next two to three months, people familiar with the matter told the Wall Street Journal. NXP acquired Freescale last year, but Qualcomm has yet to play a major role in the latest consolidation of the semiconductor industry. The merger would see Qualcomm expand beyond its traditional wireless business into new areas such as the automotive market. The company's significant cash position generated from its lucrative licensing business could help it finance such a big deal.

Qualcomm launches Snapdragon embedded processors for IoT

(Telecompaper) Qualcomm is introducing the Snapdragon 600E and 410E processors, for embedded IoT applications such as digital signage, set-top-boxes, medical imaging, point of sale systems and industrial robotics. Going beyond the company's traditional market of smartphones, the new Snapdragon products will be made available globally by third-party distributors, initially through Arrow Electronics. This is the first time Snapdragon processors are available by distributors, as Qualcomm looks to expand its potential customer base in new industries embracing wireless connectivity in the IoT.
