FairPoint blames losses on strike, bad weather

Representatives for FairPoint Communications say a lengthy strike and bad weather caused the company's $43.6 million in losses in the final three months of 2014. The North Carolina-based company operates the largest landline telephone network in northern New England.

Indian Country: Gogebic Taconite announced last week that it is closing its office in Hurley, Wisconsin and, for now, putting plans on hold to build a huge open pit iron ore mine in the pristine Penokee Mountains in Northern Wisconsin. The proposed 4.5 mile wide mine would have produced 8 million tons of finished taconite annually, rivaling the huge Hibbing Taconite in Minnesota according to a report in the Duluth Tribune. Investors short Juno Therapeutics, Amgen stocks, but that may not be bad news

More investors were shorting their biotech stocks in the first half of February than in the previous month, according to financial news site Benzinga . Of the top three companies with the most short sells, two have Puget Sound ties: Seattle-based Juno Therapeutics and California-based Amgen , which has offices in Bothell and Seattle until the end of the year.

The trucking industry is pushing a bill in the Minnesota Legislature to raise the load limits of semi trucks from 80,000 pounds to 97,000 pounds. Lori Sturdevant in the Jan. 27, 2015 Star Tribune pointed out that the Republicans in the Minnesota House of Representatives have decided not to oppose increased funding for roads and bridges, but instead stall and drag out the process until the legislative session ends on May 18,2015.
