Tons of Ocean Plastic Debris has Disappeared

2014-07-01 11:33:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Nature World: Researchers say that plastic islands in oceans have disappeared. Millions of tons of plastic items end up in oceans each day. For over a decade, scientists have assumed that most of the plastic ends up as "plastic islands" that float on oceanic surface. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is one such example of plastic debris accumulating on the surface of the ocean. However, researchers at the University of Western Australia's Oceans Institute now said that the plastic in the ocean is disappearing...

Foaming Polyurethane protects hydraulic roof supports from debris.

Pour-in-place Loctite® MR5898™ bonds to pockets and hydraulic cylinders. By foaming up to fill entire cavities and adhering to edges, foam blocks out debris, particulate, teeth, or tools that might damage equipment while remaining flexible enough to allow free movement of hydraulic leg. This self-extinguishing, low-odor foam, intended for use underground and in confined spaces, has 2-part formula that begins to foam minutes after mixing, and becomes tack-free within minutes of pouring. Heres what space debris does to the Kevlar shielding protecting the International Space Station

2014-06-25 18:30:56| Extremetech

If you've seen Gravity, you'll have noticed how a single piece of space debris can cause a cascade of destruction -- the Kessler effect -- that makes the entirety of space completely uninhabitable to spacecraft? Well, in the photo above, you can see the exit hole created by a tiny piece of aluminium space debris in a piece of Kevlar shielding -- the same shielding that protects the manned modules of the International Space Station. Space debris is serious stuff.
