Comcast turns 50,000 paying customer homes into public hotspots, millions more by the end of the year

2014-06-12 15:22:19| Extremetech

Two days ago, Comcast did something that would be inconceivable if it was any other company than Comcast: It turned 50,000 residential Xfinity modems into public WiFi hotspots. There are 50,000 paying Xfinity customers in Houston, Texas who are now broadcasting free WiFi that anyone can use. As far as Comcast is concerned, of course, this is a genius move to blanket the country in high-speed WiFi (and there are plans to hijack 8 million more modems by the end of June) -- for Comcast's customers, though, this is egregious monopolistic overreach taken to the next level... and it's possibly illegal as well.

Guardian: A group of 50 academics from some of the UK's leading universities today call on politicians to fast-track a UK shale gas industry, the latest salvo in an increasingly polarised debate around fracking. In a letter to the Guardian on Thursday, the scientists argue there are "undeniable economic, environmental and national security benefits" from shale being produced in the north-west of the country. The move comes just days after Sir Paul McCartney and 150 other celebrities called on the government...

Dutch FTTH market grows to almost 2 mln homes passed

2014-06-03 09:55:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) The Dutch FTTH market expanded to 1.94 million homes passed at the end of 2013. Of the total, 656,000 lines were actually used (homes activated), according to Telecompaper's annual FTTH report. As a result, the penetration on FTTH networks was stable compared to the end of 2012, at under 34 percent. Reggefiber was the market leader with 87 percent of homes passed in 2013, while CIF reached a market share of 10 percent at the end of 2013. The province Gelderland, in the east of the country, gained the most new homes passed in the past year, with over 120,000 homes receiving access to FTTH. South Holland, which includes The Hague and Rotterdam, followed with about 62,000, while Limburg and North Brabant in the south of the country tied for third place, each with just over 50,000 new homes passed. The report provides a short overview of what happened in the past year at big and small FTTH players, as well as briefly discusses a number of important issues in the (international) broadband and FTTH markets. Based on its FTTH Monitor, a database of all FTTH projects underway in the Netherlands, Telecompaper now estimates the country will count 3.45 million FTTH lines by 2018.

2014-06-02 14:00:00| TechNewsWorld

Apple is rumored to be launching a smart home platform at its developer conference this week. The smart home market is actually in a place that's rather similar to where MP3 players were when Apple launched the iPod, and the iPhone is basically an iPod with phone capability. The smart home effort is in part about music and video distribution, and iPhones are commonly used as remote controls.
