In response to pace of change over past 6 years regarding laboratory informatics, scope of ASTM E1578, Guide for Laboratory Informatics, has been broadened to include primary tools in today's laboratory informatics area. Additional terms related to laboratory informatics are defined, and new sections, including one on lean concepts and lab informatics, have been added. Proposed standard ASTM WK44003, Test Method for Identification and Quantification of Rare Earth Elements (REEs) in Rare Earth Materials (REMs) by X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry, is under development by Subcommittee F40.04 on REMs. According to F40 chairman Taco van der Maten, testing to this proposed standard will allow for quality statement for REEs and REMs so users know what they are buying. Four new ASTM International standards will be used to determine the presence of the impurities 4-Caraboxybenzaldehyde and p-Toluic Acid in PTA. ASTM International Committee D19 on Water has recognized Donivan Porterfield, an analytical chemistry and radiochemical measurements scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory, with the Award of Merit. Porterfield is membership secretary of both D19 and Committee C26 on Nuclear Fuel Cycle, where he also chairs Subcommittee C26.01 on Editorial and Terminology.
